The Butler Center's Inaugural Conference for Associate Professors will feature a workshop about maintaining momentum after tenure. This workshop will be conducted by Rena Seltzer of Leader Academic (see below for more about Rena Seltzer). The workshop is for two hours.

Although professors are grateful for the job security that comes with tenure, promotion brings a variety of new challenges including less clearly defined expectations and greater demands on faculty members’ time. Another benefit of promotion is the possibility to have a stronger voice in one’s department, institution, and profession. However, women professors also face gender biases that can work to mute the power of their contributions. This interactive workshop will support tenured women faculty members to:

  1. Identify sources of support and mentoring
  2. Think through decisions about what activities to accept or decline
  3. Practice speech and non-verbal techniques to assert personal authority
  4. Describe strategies to broaden the definition of what it means to be a competent and collegial woman in academia.

Rena Seltzer is president of the coaching and training business Leader Academic and author of The Coach’s Guide for Women Professors. Her workshops combine well-researched information with interactive activities and practical tools that participants remember and continue to employ long after the workshops are over.

Rena is a regular presenter at universities including Yale University, the University of Wisconsin, the University of Michigan, and the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine. She is a popular presenter for numerous other groups including Cornell University, Princeton University, the Women in Medicine Conference, and the Academy of Management.
