Award Criteria for Assistant Professors

The research project award recognizes a tenure-track or clinical assistant professor who plans to undertake a project highlighting and/or benefitting women in academe. This year projects focused on intersectionality (intersections of gender and/or race and/or ethnicity, and/or class, and/or nationality, and/or sexuality and/or other differences) will be preferred. Aimed at furthering the mission of the Butler Center, this award supports the work of an individual (or individuals) interested in developing leadership capacity of women, advancing inclusion and representation of women in academic decision-making, or some similar focus.

As the title of the award implies, there is a research component required, though data for the research may be through one or more different sources (e.g., survey, interviews, focus group discussions, documents, secondary sources, experiments etc.).

The PI must be a tenure-track assistant professor or clinical assistant professor. Additional faculty members, if any, on the proposal may be of any rank. A maximum of $3,000 is available for making one or two awards.

The Foundation will review the Butler Center’s recommendations and have sole decision-making authority with respect to each grant award based on available revenue and the Foundation’s assessment of those recommendations. Consistent with the mission of the Butler Center, the Foundation’s selection will give preference to projects that are headed by primary investigators who are women assistant professors.

The grant awardee/s will receive funding to conduct and complete their projects in one year. A report on the project and findings will have to be submitted to the Butler Center at the end of the one year project period.

Please contact us at if you have questions or need clarifications. The grant awardee/s will be recognized at the Butler Center’s end of the year reception on April 25, 2019.
