Did you know … Purdue’s Use of Vehicles for University Business policy strongly discourages the use of all electronic communication devices while operating a vehicle?

The University Risk Management Department wants staff to know that, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 80 percent of all car crashes are related to driver inattention; and 6,000 fatal crashes each year involve an inattentive driver.

Cell phone use is the No. 1 reason for inattention, the NHTSA states.

As a result, seven states – California, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Utah, and Washington – and the District of Columbia now have outright bans on the use of any handheld cell phone while driving, according to the current issue of “FleetAlert” magazine. Risk Management urges University drivers to please keep this in mind when traveling in these states. And, MOST IMPORTANTLY, to pull off the road to a safe location before using any electronic communication device whenever and wherever driving.
