Chemical policy<\/h1>\n

The use of chemicals in labs is governed by the\u00a0University Hazard Communication Standard<\/a>. The purpose of this policy is to communicate requirements and methods of compliance.<\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Definitions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

  1. Members:<\/strong>\u00a0Purdue students with an active project.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Employees:<\/strong> Any employed student\/staff of the Bechtel Center that works in a lab.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. SDS:<\/strong> Safety Data Sheet provided by the manufacturer of a chemical product.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. DTI (Designated Trained Individual): <\/strong>An employee designated to manage the documentary and training aspect of Hazard Communication Standard.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Chemical Name: <\/strong>Refers to the name of the chemical as per the SDS.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. Signal Word:<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0Single word to provide a general degree of hazard of a chemical. The 3 words used in the Center are Danger, Warning and NonHaz.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  7. GHS (Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals)<\/strong><\/a>:\u00a0<\/strong>A standard set of pictograms to depict various hazards presented by a chemical.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  8. ISO 7010:<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0An international standard set of pictograms for use with hazards and safety signs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  9. Hazard Statement:<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0On a SDS this a set of standardized statements conveying the hazards of chemical. On a label this is a simplification of the SDS hazard statements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  10. Controls:<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0A set of actions taken to manage a hazard. These can take the form of Elimination, Substitution, Engineering Controls, Administrative Controls, PPE; these are in the order decreasing effectiveness.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  11. Chemical:<\/strong>\u00a0This phrase is used for all chemicals that are not excluded from OSHA Hazard Communication Standards in\u00a029 CFR 1910.1200(b)(6)<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  12. OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration)<\/strong><\/a>:<\/strong>\u00a0A federal agency under the\u00a0US Department of Labour<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  13. Primary Container:<\/strong> The container in which the manufacturer ships the chemical.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  14. Secondary Container: <\/strong>Any container other than the primary container that stores the chemical and is not used up immediately.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  15. Containers:<\/strong> These include primary and secondary containers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  16. HWP (Hazardous Waste Pickup):\u00a0<\/strong>Purdue\u00a0Environmental Health and Safety<\/a>\u00a0department provides hazardous waste management services available to all members and employees.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
