It will also be used to check that you have the appropriate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/bidc\/policies\/#safety\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Safety Trainings<\/a>\u00a0for this reservation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>STL file<\/strong>&nbsp;of the model<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The ability to transport the file from that laptop to one of the BIDC 229 Computers (either a&nbsp;<strong>USB-A flash drive<\/strong>, any Cloud transfer program such as Dropbox or Google Drive, or emailing it to yourself after logging into the lab&#8217;s computers will work)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>During this reservation, depending on the 3D printer used, you will use either\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eiger.io\/signin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Markforged Eiger<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/formlabs.com\/software\/preform\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Formlabs PreForm<\/a>\u00a0to prepare your 3D print for 3D printing. At this point, the 3D print will be correctly oriented and, if necessary, modified, in order to successfully 3D print the model using the optimal 3D printer technology and 3D print material.<br><br>Some of our 3D printing technologies require post-processing, which involves the student cleaning the model after 3D printing and before part usage. Before leaving the 3D printing reservation (as you do not need to stay for the whole 3D print), make sure to reserve time on the appropriate\u00a0post-processing machine.<br><br>The primary materials listed with each 3D printer are the materials that the lab regularly supplies and makes available for student use. If none of the materials stocked at the Bechtel Center are compatible with a given project, students are welcomed to bring in their own materials to use, provided students follow lab bring-your-own material procedures. Every new material must first be registered and approved as a chemical per the center&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/bidc\/policies\/chemical-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chemical policy<\/a>. The following are the most common file formats:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>DXF or DWG \u2013 AutoCAD format\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This is best for cutting operations. Easy to generate from most 3D CAD programs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>AI \u2013 Adobe Illustrator format\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This is good for engraving and cutting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SVG \u2013 Vector and raster file format\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This is OK for engraving and cutting, prefer Adobe Illustrator.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PDF\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This is OK for engraving and cutting, prefer Adobe Illustrator.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Image files: PNG, JPG, BMP, \u2026\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Raster files for engraving only.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lineweight and color<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Lineweights and colors are critical in setting up cut lines in a program. If you do not follow these instructions your job will not work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Black is used for engraving&nbsp;<em>(R0,G0,B0)<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Red is used for cutting the outside border* (R255,G0,B0)*<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Blue and Green are used for cutting internal holes or scoring&nbsp;<em>(R0,G0,B255 or R0,G255,B0)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Color<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>These are the only colors the laser will recognize:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/bidc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/trotec-layer-colors.png\" alt=\"List of colors the laser cutter will recognize\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lineweight<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>For cut lines you will want the line weight to be set to the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>AutoCAD \u2192 0.00mm or 0.00in<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inkscape \u2192 0.5pt or less (this will be called&nbsp;<em>stroke<\/em>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adobe Illustrator \u2192 0.001pt (this will be called&nbsp;<em>stroke<\/em>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Additional Process<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>To better optimize your job in AutoCAD:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Select everything (<em>ctrl A<\/em>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Type&nbsp;<em>Join<\/em>&nbsp;into the command prompt and hit enter<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This will combine most closed shapes into a continuous line. Which the laser will then cut out as one line instead of a bunch of line segments.
