Storage Policy

The use of chemicals in labs is governed by the University Hazard Communication Standard. The purpose of this policy is to communicate requirements and methods of compliance.

Definitions:

  1. Members: Purdue students with an active project on our project management system
  2. Center Hosted Teams: Bechtel annually allocated a limited number of spaces in Assembly BIDC B003 to Purdue clubs. 
  3. Staff: All full-time employees at the Bechtel Center. 
  4. Central Lost and Found: A sub section of Purdue Surplus that manages lost and found items for Purdue. 
  5. Lost and Found: A location in the center where we store unclaimed items for a week. 
  6. Controlled Door: A door that only opens with the ID of an authorized individual. 
  7. Storage Location: Instead of storing item/s we may provide a location where the member may store items themselves. 
  8. Assigned Location: A location designated for storage of items from a lab. Currently not well defined. 
  9. Assigner: A center employee who has the ability to grant storage through storage tags. 
  10. Assignee: A Purdue student/staff/entity that is being granted storage through storage tags. 

Disclaimer:

  1. Storage is at your own risk. No compensation will be provided for lost, damaged or stolen items. 
  2. Abandoned items may be trashed, used or sent to lost and found based on size, value and/or utility without notice. 
  3. Items stored without following the rules in this document will be considered abandoned. 
  4. Allowance of storage doesn’t imply an allowance of use. This generally applies to chemicals under the Chemical Policy and tools under the safety Class system.

This policy doesn’t apply to the following locations, which are covered by different guidelines stated below.

Office Spaces Staff – Staff may store items in their office. 
– They must be actively employed at the Bechtel Center.  
Peer Mentor Lockers and Cabinets Student Employees – Student employees may store items in their personal lockers/drawers. 
– Lockers/drawers must be allocated through staff approval. 
– They must be actively employed at the Bechtel Center. 
Break Room All Employees – Employees may store food items in the shared space. 
– Any spilled, expired and/or rotting food may be discarded at any employee’s discretion. 
Assembly Center Hosted Teams – Teams may store items within the boundaries of their designated location. 
– They must be actively sponsored by the Bechtel Center.  
Receiving Members – Guidelines found in Receiving Policy (LINK).

Types of Storage:

We offer 3 major types of storage, each with its own scope, restrictions and requirements. All storage requires valid center issued tags. In the absence/expiry of tags items are considered abandoned.
