Volunteer Of The Week

Each week, we recognize a student from our Volunteer Management Team for their strong contributions to our department.  Students are recognized in their ensembles sometime during the week, and receive a special recognition pin from our Student Life Team.  We have over 150 students involved in our Volunteer Management Teams; these students are among the “best of the best!”

Congratulations to these outstanding student volunteers!

Week of 11/7/16
Issei Kobayashi, Supply
Baritone, “All-American” Marching Band
“Issei has been very helpful this semester.  He is always willing to step up when work needs to be done.  He has helped run all of the brass horn baths and saxophone cleaning this semester.  He has proven to be incredibly reliable and a hard worker.  He never needs to be asked to help.  He has shown great initiative this entire semester.”
(ed. note: Two days before receiving this recognition, Issei accomplished something far greater: completing the process for citizenship and taking the oath of allegiance to the United States of America.  Congratulations, Issei!)

Week of 10/31/16
Katherine Grosch, Operations
Violin, Philharmonic Orchestra
“For as long as the current veterans have been around, nobody can remember someone in orchestra being in ops. As an orchestra member, Katherine has been an exceptional member of the operations team. Furthermore, she seems to genuinely enjoy what she’s doing within the team. Whether it’s blocking traffic, helping with game day, or setting up an indoor concert, we can always count on Katherine to be there. Her work ethic has been exceptional from day one and has continued to remain strong throughout the year. More recently, she has been filling blocking holes voluntarily and was at game day from ops call time to close.”

Week of 10/24/16
Alexis Mueller, Clothing
Clarinet, “All-American” Marching Band
“Alexis has been essential in all aspects of Clothing from coming early and staying late during her office hours to sewing pants at midnight before a game.  She makes herself available during dry cleaning and makes sure everything is in order and ready for distribution.  Clothing would not run at all (much less efficiently) without her help.”

Week of 10/17/16
Nick Iavagnilio, Library
Trumpet, “All-American” Marching Band
“Nick has always been a reliable volunteer for the Library team, but this past week he has gone above and beyond typical duties.  With a busy week of programs, Boiler Brass folder distribution, GABS preparation, and concert band turnover, he has been in the office volunteering through all of it, spending many hours in our office every day and over the weekend.  Not only is he dependable, he’s a consistent volunteer and all of his work is always at the highest standard.”

Week of 10/10/16
Amanda Grimm, Technology
Tenor Saxophone, “All-American” Marching Band
“Amanda stepped up when we needed someone to take this position (lights crew), worked every week picking up from where her predecessor left off, has done a great job including and communicating with her team, and has handled the issues we’ve faced this week exceptionally well.”

Week of 10/3/16
Heather Williams, Library
Tenor Saxophone, Wind Ensemble and “All-American” Marching Band
“She consistently is on hand for every-day Library duties, as well as coordinated and implemented the exchange of wind ensemble folders after the first concert and made for a very smooth transition into the next concert’s preparations in rehearsal.”

Week of 9/26/16
Brady Buckles, Operations
Clarinet, “All-American” Marching Band
“Over the course of the last week, I have been absent in times where expertise in operations was needed. During these times, Brady was there to remedy the situation like an automatic backup system. Without prompting or instruction from me, he has taken the initiative to solve problems not only in the absence of senior members or team leadership, but also in a supporting manner. He has been an excellent role model for the new operations members, and continues to be one of the greatest assets to the team.”

Week of 9/19/16
Robert Barlow, Supply and Equipment
Tuba, Wind Ensemble
“He has been incredibly helpful with coordinating the team’s efforts while the marching band members are busy. In addition, he has made a point to go out of his way with training new team members.”

Week of 9/12/16
Kristin Haehl, Advancement
Violin, Philharmonic Orchestra
“She has brought in a lot of insight to the team regarding the integration of the orchestras to the teams. She has been a welcomed advocate for the orchestras and she has taken charge with the thank-a-thon for the orchestras.”

Week of 9/5/16
Marissa Larson, Student Life
Clarinet, “All-American” Marching Band
“Marissa has taken incredible initiative so far, even before the semester began, managing the AAMB photo book and Charms roster and collaborating with Technology team members to proactively improve our Online Toolbox website and database. Her diverse skill set makes her an enormous asset to the Student Life team, and to the department as a whole.”

Week of 8/29/16
Jacob Boesch, Supply and Equipment
Baritone, “All-American” Marching Band
“He has been an extremely big help for these first two weeks while I was still at my internship. He ran the supply team in my absence and did a very good job.”
