Jazz Bands and American Music Repertory Ensemble (AMRE)

All students interested in playing or singing in the Purdue Jazz Band or American Music Repertory Ensemble (AMRE) must audition between October 3-7 at Slayter Center for the Performing Arts.  Those students who are not interested in auditioning for the Purdue Jazz Band or American Music Repertory Ensemble (AMRE) or who are not assigned to those top groups following an audition, must audition during the weeks of October 11-13 and October 16-19.

  • Instrumental auditions will consist of one of the two prepared selections and the scales provided, sight-reading, and improvisation. Candidates for PJB or AMRE MUST play Etude Two.  Improvisation includes two choruses of F or Bb blues accompanied by an Aebersold CD provided by Dr. Mo Trout if you select Etude One.  Improvisation is included as part of Etude Two.
  • Bass, guitar and piano players will be expected to sight read chord changes.
  • Those auditioning for an AMRE vocal spot should be able to sing a variety of music, but should have prepared both a ballad and an up-tempo, jazz-style song that will best showcase your talent.  Have music memorized, and bring an accompaniment for the rehearsal pianist to play. You may also use your own accompanist or Karaoke on YouTube (no a cappella singing).  Singers will be asked to sing on a microphone and sound system. Those who have instrumental talents, as well as singing abilities, are encouraged to also audition as instrumentalists!

Students who wish to be considered for the Purdue Jazz Band and/or American Music Repertory Ensemble, must contact Dr.  Mo Trout (mttrout@purdue.edu) immediately.
