Spring 2020 Ensemble Audition Information


WIND ENSEMBLE AND PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA WINDS (Please see below for string audition info.)

All winds and percussionists interested in playing in the Wind Ensemble or Philharmonic Orchestra must audition between September 30-October 3.

Wind Ensemble/Philharmonic Winds and Percussionists: Wind Players MUST prepare Excerpts TWO and THREE from the audition etudes as well as the required scale/chromatic scale provided. Percussionists MUST prepare ALL THREE ETUDES.

  • Sight reading will be a requirement.
  • Students participating in the Purdue University Co-Op Program or those who are currently at an internship: Please contact Professor Jay Gephart (jsgephart@purdue.edu) immediately to be considered for a top ensemble.
  • Sign-up for audition times in the main department office, Elliott room 135.

PHILHARMONIC AND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA STRINGS

All string players must audition between October 14-18.

  • Please have prepared three (3) minutes of music (solo literature or an etude) and 2 major scales played ascending and descending in three octaves.  For Philharmonic consideration: Violin choose from A, C, or E-flat major; Viola/Cello choose from D, F, or A major; Bass choose from E, F, or G major.
  • Those students participating in the university co-op program or those who are currently in an internship will have the opportunity to audition once they return to campus in January.
  • Sign-ups for audition times are on Professor Bodony’s office door, Elliott Room 056.

SYMPHONIC BAND, CONCERT BAND, COLLEGIATE BAND, VARSITY BAND, CAMPUS BAND, AND UNIVERSITY BAND

Those students who are not interested in auditioning for Wind Ensemble or Philharmonic Orchestra or who are not assigned to those top groups following an audition must audition during the weeks of October 9-11 and October 14-17.

  • Students who auditioned for Wind Ensemble and/or Philharmonic Orchestra who were not selected, will be required to audition again for placement in one of the other concert groups.
  • Students must prepare two of the three audition etudes as well as the required scale/chromatic scale provided.  Percussionists must prepare the snare and mallet excerpt (no timpani).
  • Sight reading will also be a requirement!
  • Those students participating in the Purdue University Co-Op Program or those who are currently at an internship will be able to audition upon their return to campus in January. Please contact Professor Doug Fletcher drfletch@purdue.edu) to let him know of your interest.

JAZZ BANDS, TOWER OF POWER BAND, AND AMERICAN MUSIC REPERTORY ENSEMBLE (AMRE)

All Jazz Bands (including AMRE and Tower of Power Band)  must audition during the weeks of October 9-11 and October 14-18.  Audition signup sheets are at Slayter.  Instrumental auditions (alto, tenor, baritone saxophones, trumpets, trombones) will consist of the required prepared selection and two scales with arpeggios provided (one of which should be the last Dorian scale on the sheet), sight-reading, and improvisation. Candidates for PJB or AMRE MUST play Etude with the provided back track recording. Improvisation includes two choruses of F or Bb blues accompanied by an Aebersold CD provided by Dr. Mo Trout or improvisation over the provided back track (chords are to the tune ‘There Will Never Be Another You”)

  • Piano/ guitar / vibes – Prepared piece of your choice – as much of the provided Etude as possible. No Scales – 1 or 2 choruses. Improvisation from website “no piano” recording (There Will Never Be Another You).
  • Bass – Prepared piece of your choice – Etude –  Notes 1st four lines – walk a bass line through the whole form with provided “no bass” recording (There Will Never Be Another You).
  • Drum set – Demonstrate time feels as asked from Dr. Trout. Jazz Etude (with repeat and trading fours second time through). Sight Reading.
  • Those auditioning for an AMRE vocal spot should be able to sing a variety of music, but should have prepared both a ballad and an up-tempo, jazz-style song that will best showcase your talent.  Have music memorized.  Plan to use your own accompanist or Karaoke recording on YouTube (no a cappella singing).  Singers will be asked to sing on a microphone and sound system. Those who have instrumental talents, as well as singing abilities, are encouraged to also audition as instrumentalists!
  • Those students participating in the Purdue University Co-Op Program or those who are currently at an internship, will be able to audition upon their return to campus in January. Students who wish to be considered for the Purdue Jazz Band and/or American Music Repertory Ensemble, must contact Dr.  Mo Trout (mttrout@purdue.edu) immediately.
  • Please sign up for an audition time at Slayter Center Rehearsal Hall.
