WIND ENSEMBLE, CONCERT BANDS, ORCHESTRA WINDS & PERCUSSION

Openings for Piccolo, Flute, all Clarinets, all Double Reeds, all Saxophones, Trumpet, Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, and Percussion.

  • When are music auditions?
    • Incoming Freshmen:  Audition during Summer Transition, Advising, and Registration (STAR) in June/July.
    • Transfer Students:  Sign up for an individual audition by contacting bandsinfo@purdue.edu.
    • Current Students:  Wind Ensemble & PPO Winds: 4/15, 4/16, 4/23, 4/25. All other Brass & Winds: 4/15-4/18, 4/23-4/25. Please sign-up for your audition in room 135 at Elliott Hall of Music. Percussion should sign-up for auditions outside Room 32.

    • Those missing one of these opportunities may set up a virtual audition. Registration is still required.

  • What should I prepare for my audition?

WOODWIND/BRASS

All students will play the scales specified on your audition sheet, and at least ONE provided etude that best fits your ability.  If you would like to be considered for more advanced ensembles, you should perform TWO etudes.  For consideration for the Wind Ensemble or Philharmonic Orchestra, you MUST play Etude 2 and 3.  Everyone will also be asked to sight-read a brief exercise at the conclusion of your audition.

PERCUSSION

All students will play the snare and mallet requirements and etudes specified on the audition sheet.  For consideration for the Wind Ensemble or Philharmonic Orchestra, the timpani audition sheet must also be performed.

ORCHESTRA STRINGS

Openings for Violin, Viola, Cello, and String Bass

  • When are music auditions?
    • Incoming Freshmen:  Audition during Summer Transition, Advising, and Registration (STAR) in June/July.

    • Current Students:  Audition April 23-26. Please sign-up for your audition in room 56 at Elliott Hall of Music.

    • Those missing one of these opportunities may set up a virtual audition. Registration is still required.

  • What should I prepare for my audition?
    • One prepared solo or etude (2-3 minutes in length.)
    • Students will play alone, without accompaniment.
    • Please prepare two scales of your choosing (ascending and descending in three octaves.)
    • There may be a sight-reading portion.
  • How do I enroll in a concert band or orchestra?
    • Enroll with your academic advisor during STAR.

JAZZ BANDS

Ensembles include the Purdue Jazz Band, American Music Repertory Ensemble (AMRE), Lab Jazz Bands, Tower of Power Band, and Guitar & Saxophone Ensemble.

  • When are music auditions?
    • Incoming Freshmen:  Audition during Summer Transition, Advising, and Registration (STAR) in June/July.
    • Transfer Students:  Sign up for an individual audition by contacting bandsinfo@purdue.edu.
    • Current Students will audition the 2nd and 3rd weeks of April. Please sign-up for your audition with Dr. Mo Trout at Slayter Center for the Performing Arts.
      • Those students participating in the Purdue University Co-Op Program or those who are currently on an internship will be able to audition upon their return to campus in August. Students who wish to be considered for the Purdue Jazz Band and/or American Music Repertory Ensemble, must contact Dr. Mo Trout immediately.

    • Those missing one of these opportunities may set up a virtual audition. Registration is still required.

  • What should I prepare for my audition?
    • Instrumental auditions:
      • Prepare one of the two provided etudes. (Etude 2 one time only)
      • Prepare two of the provided scales and arpeggios. 
      • Be prepared to sight-read and improvise over two choruses of concert pitch F or Bb blues accompanied by an Aebersold CD (provided by Dr. Mo Trout) or two choruses of a song of your choosing. (Please provide your own play-a-long recording.)

  • Bass, guitar, vibes, and piano: 
    • Prepare one of the two provided audition etudes and play the lead sheet chords (‘A’ Train) in an appropriate comping style for piano, guitar, or vibes.
    • Prepare a jazz style piece that demonstrates your proficiency. 
    • Please play chord changes or a walking bass line (for bass), and prepare two of the scales from the included scale sheet.
    • Be prepared to sight-read and improvise over two choruses of concert pitch F or Bb Blues (Dr. Mo Trout will provide recorded accompaniment.)

  • Drum Set:
    • Prepare both of the provided audition etudes, interpreting these as you would a Big Band chart.
    • You will also be asked to demonstrate a variety of style patterns including: Medium Swing, Fast Swing, Bossa, Samba, Funk or Hip Hop, and Jazz Waltz.
    • Be prepared to sight-read.

  • Vocalist Auditions (including soloist spots with various jazz bands and/or AMRE vocal group):
    • Prepare a ballad and an up-tempo jazz-style song that best showcase your voice. You should be able to sing a variety of music.
    • Please have your music memorized and bring an accompaniment for the rehearsal pianist to play. You may use your own accompanist or Karaoke on YouTube if you wish, but no acappella singing.
    • Vocalists will be asked to sing on a microphone and sound system.
    • Vocalists who also play an instrument are encouraged to audition as instrumentalists, as well!
  • How do I enroll in jazz band? 
    • Enroll with your academic advisor during STAR.
