WIND ENSEMBLE, CONCERT BANDS, ORCHESTRA WINDS & PERCUSSION

Openings for Piccolo, Flute, all Clarinets, all Double Reeds, all Saxophones, Trumpet, Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, and Percussion.

  • When are music auditions?
    • Incoming Freshmen:  Audition during Summer Transition, Advising, and Registration (STAR) in June/July. We will not schedule exact audition times prior to the day of. When you have a scheduled break during your STAR date, give us a call at 765-494-0770, and we will let you know when to stop by that day.
    • Transfer Students:  Sign up for an individual audition by contacting bandsinfo@purdue.edu.
    • Current Students:  April 10-20,  Please sign-up for your audition in room 135 at Elliott Hall of Music.
  • How do I sign up for auditions?
  • What if I cannot attend on-campus STAR? How can I audition?
    • Those attending virtual STAR or missing the above opportunities, may audition during BGR week (August 13-17) or during the first week of classes (August 20-24.)
    • REGISTER HERE. Contact bandsinfo@purdue.edu with any additional questions.
  • What should I prepare for my audition?
    • One prepared solo, etude, or excerpt from orchestra or band music of your choosing that includes contrasting styles (2-3 minutes in length.)
    • Students will play alone, without accompaniment.
    • Please prepare two scales of your choosing (one should be at least two octaves.) Percussionists should prepare two rudiments, if applicable.
    • There will be a brief sight-reading portion.

  • How do I enroll in a concert band or orchestra?
    • Enroll with your academic advisor during STAR.

ORCHESTRA STRINGS

Openings for Violin, Viola, Cello, String Bass, and Harp.

  • When are music auditions?

    • Current Students:  Friday, March 23rd from 11 am-3 pm; 5 pm-7 pm, Monday, March 26th from 11 am-3 pm, Thursday, March 29th from 11 am-3 pm. Please sign-up for your audition on Professor Bodony’s office door.

JAZZ BANDS

Ensembles include the Purdue Jazz Band, American Music Repertory Ensemble (AMRE), Lab Jazz Bands, Tower of Power band, and Guitar & Saxophone Ensemble.

  • When are music auditions?
    • Incoming Freshmen:  Audition during Summer Transition, Advising, and Registration (STAR) in June/July. We will not schedule exact audition times prior to the day of. When you have a scheduled break during your STAR date, give us a call at 765-494-0770, and we will let you know when to stop by that day.
    • Transfer Students:  Sign up for an individual audition by contacting bandsinfo@purdue.edu.
    • Current Students will audition in April (dates TBA.) Please sign-up for your audition with Scott Pazera at Slayter Center for the Performing Arts.
      • Those students participating in the Purdue University Co-Op Program or those who are currently on an internship will be able to audition upon their return to campus in August. Students who wish to be considered for the Purdue Jazz Band and/or American Music Repertory Ensemble, must contact Dr. Mo Trout & Scott Pazera immediately.
  • How do I sign up for auditions?

  • What should I prepare for my audition?
    • Instrumental auditions:
      • Prepare the attached selections and scales. Please contact bandsinfo@purdue.edu for the password.
      • Be prepared to sight-read and improvise over two choruses of F or Bb blues accompanied by an Aebersold CD (provided by Dr. Mo Trout & Scott Pazera,) or two choruses of a song of your choosing. (Please provide your own play-a-long recording.)
    • Bass, guitar, vibes, and piano: 
    • Drum Set:
      • Prepare both of the following audition etudes, interpreting these as you would a Big Band chart. Please contact bandsinfo@purdue.edu for the password.
      • You will also be asked to demonstrate a variety of style patterns including: Medium Swing, Fast Swing, Bossa, Samba, Funk or Hip Hop, and Jazz Waltz.
      • Be prepared to sight-read.
    • Vocalist Auditions (including soloist spots with various jazz bands and/or AMRE vocal group):
      • Prepare a ballad and an up-tempo jazz-style song that best showcase your voice. You should be able to sing a variety of music.
      •  Please have your music memorized and bring an accompaniment for the rehearsal pianist to play. You may use your own accompanist or Karaoke on YouTube if you wish, but no acappella singing.
      • Vocalists will be asked to sing on a microphone and sound system.
      • Vocalists who also play an instrument are encouraged to audition as instrumentalists, as well!
  • How do I enroll in jazz band? 
    • Enroll with your academic advisor during STAR.
