Purdue Bands & Orchestras COVID-19 FAQs

Purdue University COVID-19 Response

Updates for Fall 2020

(Last Updated 8/12/20)

FALL SPORTS SEASON POSTPONED

How it Impacts Purdue Bands & Orchestras Activities

On Tuesday, August 11, the Big Ten Conference announced the postponement of all fall sports for 2020. The announcement directly affects two Purdue Bands & Orchestras ensembles, including Boiler Box Band, which supports Purdue Women’s Volleyball, and the Purdue “All-American” Marching Band.  With the postponement of the volleyball season, the extracurricular Boiler Box Band will not meet this fall. The Purdue “All-American” Marching Band, which meets as a class at Purdue University, will continue to rehearse during the fall despite the postponement of all football games. Read the full statement HERE.

INDOOR ENSEMBLE CONCERTS

Indoor ensemble concerts will be closed to the public.

Due to campus restrictions on Events and Visitors for the fall semester, all band and orchestra indoor concerts will be closed to the public. A limited number of students from on campus may be permitted to attend these concerts in person (to be determined). The concerts will be livestreamed for parents, community members, alumni, and our many other wonderful supporters to enjoy. Stay tuned for further updates on fall concerts!

SPECIAL EVENTS & REUNIONS

Special Events & Reunions will be suspended for the fall semester.

Any special events hosting visitors from off campus will be suspended for the fall semester. This is due to the restrictions on Events and Visitors in the Protect Purdue initiative. Events being suspended for the fall include:

> Purdue Band Day (High School Bands)

> Alumni Golduster Reunion (Homecoming 2020)

> Tuba Christmas (Purdue University location)

The current plan is that these events will resume in the following year (2021) with the exception of the Alumni Golduster Reunion. The department will recognize the 40th Anniversary of the Golduster Dance Team in various ways throughout the year.

Homecoming 2021 will feature the Purdue Alumni Band celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Big Bass Drum.

INDY 500 Participation

The Purdue “All-American” Marching Band will NOT perform at the 2020 Indy 500.

Due to restrictions related to COVID-19, the Purdue “All-American” Marching Band will not perform in the 2020 Indianapolis 500 festivities. The race was rescheduled to August 23 with limited fan attendance. However, due to the nature of the band’s performance responsibilities and restrictions that will be in place, there is no feasible way for the band to participate at the event. This includes foregoing performances in the IPL 500 Festival Parade in Downtown Indianapolis and the traditional pre-race festivities at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This decision will not have an impact on the band’s continued future participation in the Indianapolis 500.
