Roy A. Johnson “Partners in Music Education”
During the fall of 1999, Purdue Bands & Orchestras launched “Partners in Music Education” as a pilot program. Its purpose was to establish a true partnership between Purdue Bands & Orchestras and Indiana high school instrumental music programs involving all facets of performance, from orchestras, jazz and concert bands, to athletic pep bands.
At a minimum, Purdue Bands & Orchestras “partners” one of its athletic pep bands with the host school for a high school boys/girls basketball game and also “partners” a concert ensemble. The “partner school” concert ensemble(s) is expected to travel to Purdue’s campus in the spring for a day of clinics and “side by side’ rehearsals, followed by a performance at the host school by that same Purdue concert ensemble. Other opportunities are available in the partnership.
The resulting message of the “partnership” is a reminder to everyone that high school graduation need not be an end, but rather a bridge to new opportunities for exciting and rewarding lifelong musical experiences; whether in the local community, on a college campus, or even at Purdue University!

History of Indiana high school involvement.
“I want to extend my sincerest thanks to both the Berry Band and the Boiler Brass for making the experience of attending a game even more memorable. We like taking our kids to these kinds of experiences they might not otherwise get. The band members took time to high five and fist bump our boys as they walked by as well as stop and answer questions about their instruments.”
“I wanted to say THANK YOU to the directors and the students. There was such a great energy in our gym. One I haven’t experienced in years.”
