Transfer
Credit
It is very common for students to take classes at other institutions and then transfer the credit to their Purdue academic record. There are a few things you should know before planning summer courses at another institution:
Make sure that you are eligible to take transfer courses. You must be a degree-seeking student and eligible to register for courses at Purdue-West Lafayette. If you have been academically dropped from Purdue-West Lafayette, you cannot take courses at any of the Purdue Regional Campuses for the length of the drop status.
Make sure that Purdue- West Lafayette can accept transfer credits from your institution. U.S. institutions must be regionally accredited in order to do so.
Begin your research early. For example, if you are interested in taking summer classes, have your institution and courses chosen by the end of March or earlier. Many institutions have early admission deadlines for transfer students.
The College of Agriculture, the Krannert School of Management, and the School of Nursing (part of the College of Health & Human Sciences) have restrictions on certain transfer credit. Please click here for more information.
The only way to replace grades taken at Purdue is to retake the course at Purdue (or at one of its regional campuses). Course credit transferred from an institution outside of Purdue (and its regional campuses) does not replace course grades for equivalent courses at Purdue.
Each type of institution has its own process for transferring courses back to Purdue. Please choose one of the below options for step-by-step instructions:
For more information about transferring credit to Purdue, contact the Credit Evaluation Office located in Schleman Hall, room 108. The telephone number is (765) 494-6482.
If you are planning to take courses at institutions outside of the United States, please contact the Office of International Students and Scholars, Schleman Hall, room 136. The telephone number is (765) 494-5770.
Taking Courses at Purdue Regional Campuses
The Purdue Regional Campuses are a system of Purdue-affiliated institutions and include:
IUPUC (Columbus, IN)
IPFW (Fort Wayne, IN)
IUPUI (Indianapolis, IN)
Purdue University Calumet (Hammond, IN)
Purdue University North Central (Westville, IN)
The first three campuses are shared with Indiana University.
IMPORTANT: If you take a course at one of the Purdue Regional Campuses, both thecredit and the grade will transfer to Purdue - West Lafayette.
To successfully transfer courses from a Purdue Regional Campus:
1) RESEARCH THE COURSE:
Meet with your USP advisor to discuss course possibilities. You want to make sure that you understand how the course you will be taking fits into your degree plan.
Check to see if the Purdue Regional Campus is offering the course(s) you want for the summer.
Courses at a Purdue Regional Campus may have different numbers and titles than those at West Lafayette. Check the the Equivalent List to get the right course number and title.
If transfer credit is to be recorded as undistributed credit (e.g., CHM 1XXXX), then an academic advisor from the college of school where your major is housed (not your USP advisor) can let you know how the credit will be used (i.e. fulfill a major requirement or an elective).
2) GAIN ADMISSION FOR THE SUMMER:
Different Purdue Regional Campuses have different admissions requirements for transfer students. Some, like IUPUI, have specific instructions for Purdue students.
Be prepared to send AT LEAST a college transcript and fill out an online application (some require H.S. transcripts, as well). A Purdue college transcript can be ordered, free of charge, at the desk in front of HOVDE 45. A mailing address for the transcripts is generally found on the institution's transfer information page.
The links below will provide you course, admission, and transfer credit information for the Purdue Regional Campuses:
