Jen and Nikki Know the Dangers of Facebook and Other Social Networking Sites. Do YOU??
Nikki warns: "You might be stalked!"
- Students can be stalked by strangers (or even acquaintances) because of detailed and specific information (i.e. phone numbers, addresses, class schedules, social plans, etc.) posted on Facebook*.
- The ".edu" access to the Facebook site may give students a false sense of security. Some colleges and universities will grant free e-mail addresses to alumni without checking whether the individual is an actual alumnus.
- Other social networking sites such as myspace.com, friendster.com, and xanga.com are even less secure because they have complete public access and are open to anyone.
Jen recommends: "Read this Associated Press account from February 2006!"
BOULDER, Colo. - Detectives used profiles posted on the MySpace social networking Web site to identify six suspects in a rape and robbery that began when a party turned violent, leaving blood "in almost every room of the house," officials said.
Six men were arrested in connection with the Feb. 23 rampage, and a seventh suspect was being sought, Detective Ali Bartley said Friday.
The victim, whose name was withheld, became acquainted with the suspects through MySpace, authorities said.
Jen and Nikki advise: "Stay Safe and Be Prepared!"
- Do not post private information such as: cell phone, address, class schedule, social plans, etc.
- Utilize the "Privacy" settings on your Facebook account. You can adjust your privacy settings to control who has access to your personal information.
- "Google" yourself to see how your name or identity is being used.
