May 6, 2009 Airplane bird strike experts available at PurdueBird vision and behavior, methods to deter birdsEsteban Fernandez-Juricic, associate professor of biological sciences. Fernandez-Juricic studies the evolution of visual systems in birds and strategies to solve human-wildlife interactions in urbanized landscapes, protected areas and airports. He is currently working on a project to develop lights that would make aircraft more visible to birds and robotic raptors to deter birds from airports. Issues that lead to bird strikes, wildlife in human environments Gene Rhodes, professor of forestry and natural resources. Rhodes studies the ecology and sustainability of wildlife species in human-dominated, agricultural environments with an emphasis on the resolution of human-wildlife conflicts. He recently finished a study of small airports and the issues that lead to airplanes striking mammals, including inadequate fencing and nearby ground cover. Aircraft operations Richard Fanjoy, associate professor and associate department head of aviation technology. Fanjoy's primary research areas are air transportation aircraft operations, the principles of high-performance flight, and advanced aircraft flight systems and instrumentation. He also manages the aviation department's Boeing 727-100 flight simulator program. He has more than 32 years of experience as a pilot of large jet transport aircraft in both domestic and international flight operations.
