Purdue has strong Web presence, according to ranking

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University, which is second among U.S. public universities in international student enrollment, is a popular Internet destination worldwide, according to a new ranking.

An international higher education search engine and directory reviewing accredited universities and colleges this week placed Purdue sixth among its list of the top 200 institutions in its 4icu.org Web Popularity Ranking. 4 International Colleges & Universities' aim was to provide an approximate popularity ranking of worldwide universities and colleges based upon the popularity of the institutions' Web sites.  The rankings can "especially help international students to understand how popular a specific university/college is in a foreign country," rankings organizers say.

"Purdue's high ranking in Web searches and in-bound links shows that the university has a strong reputation, good Web content and brand, both in the United States and internationally," said Gerry McCartney, chief information officer and vice president for Information Technology at Purdue (ITaP). "This is not only an affirmation of our Web content, but this strong brand also gives our graduates a platform to stand on as they enter the job market."

The organization used an algorithm including  independent Web metrics from the Google page rank and Yahoo Inbound links, to come up with its rankings.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology received the rankings' top spot. Harvard was second, the University of California, Berkley third, and the universities of Michigan and Illinois at Urbana-Champaign fourth and fifth, followed by Purdue. Indiana University placed 12th and the University of Notre Dame 198th among Indiana institutions.

4 International Colleges & Universities is an international higher education search engine and directory reviewing worldwide accredited universities and colleges. The organization includes 8,750 universities ranked by Web popularity in 200 countries. The 4icu.org Web Popularity Ranking is updated every six months.
