Researches the freezing resistance and durability of high-strength concrete. Seeks ways to reduce the pressure when water in concrete alternately freezes and thaws, cracking the concrete. Says one approach is reducing the amount of water in the concrete mix when it is being poured.

Has conducted extensive research on highway, bridge and transportation planning nationally and for the state of Indiana, including economics, management, maintenance and financing issues. Is a consultant to the World Bank on infrastructure issues worldwide. Is serving, or has served, as a chairman or member of numerous national committees of the Transportation Research Board and the American Society of Civil Engineers. Currently is editor-in-chief of the Journal of Transportation Engineering.

Research projects include accelerated pavement testing, effects of moisture on pavements, and design of pavements for high volumes of truck traffic. Has worked with Army Corps of Engineers in area of pavement research.
