CG: School of Veterinary Medicine, Purdue University, W. Lafayette, IN VO As with any strenuous sport, the athletes of harness racing -- the horses -- sometimes get injured. But the risk of injury may now be reduced thanks to a new high-tech treadmill at Purdue University's School of Veterinary Medicine. Doctor Laurent Couëtil (lor-AWNT koy-TEEL) says the treadmill gets the horse running up to a speed of 30 miles per hour, providing improved assessment of the animal's overall fitness.

You can program specific exercises that you want to use for a particular investigation. If you want to work out a particular respiratory problem, you can actually design the program and the computer will run the treadmill basically and deliver exactly the type of exercise you need.

6. ENG/NAT SOUND VO By using the treadmill, veterinarians can now detect the two most common causes of poor performance, lameness and respiratory problems. The machine is a valuable learning tool for students and aids faculty in research and clinical investigation.

7. ENG / NAT SOUND Dr. Couëtil SOT COUETIL I would say when you look at a horse exercising right in front of your eyes you can really analyze what is going on and you can really go point by point and explain what we are seeing and what should be worked at.
