CG: Purdue University, W. Lafayette, IN NARRATOR SOT Purdue's summer aerospace camp has taken off to new heights at the Purdue University Airport. Groups ranging from pre-schoolers to high school students and their teachers learn about flying and space travel. Aviation Technology Professor Bill Watkins says the programs emphasize hands-on activities.

4. ENG/SOT

CG: Bill Watkins, Associate Professor, Purdue Aviation Technology WATKINS SOT We start out with the students building model rockets. After their construction is complete we then put them in a wind tunnel, make sure they're stable and then allow the participants to shoot their rockets off.

5. ENG/NAT SOUND NAT SOUND UP FULL (Countdown and rocket launchings)

6. ENG/NAT SOUND NARRATOR/SOT The students are also introduced to fundamentals of flight -- the concepts of lift, weight, thrust and drag.

7. ENG / SOT

CG: Jeff Bockelman, Purdue Aerospace Camper, Richland, IN JEFF SOT We've learned about how airplanes work and how the engines work and we saw the inside of the engine.

8. ENG/SOT (Watkins) WATKINS SOT We will use some basic, simple mathematics to determine the strength of various pieces of metal and then go up into the lab and actually test them. We talk to them about navigation and how pilots navigate. And I think the thing that makes it unique is that they have the opportunity to crawl around in the airplane, actually get their hands on, see how the flight controls work. Oh, I think the favorite of all of them is taking a flight in an actual aircraft.

10. ENG/SOT

CG: Lacy Tyring, Purdue Aerospace Camper, Fort Branch, IN LACY SOT Yes, I flew a plane and it was a really neat experience. I want to be a pilot. I've wanted to for a long time and this just makes me want to do it even more.
