October 5, 2000 Alumni express satisfaction with their educationHAMMOND, Ind. - More than 97 percent of Purdue University Calumet graduates responding to a recent university assessment survey expressed satisfaction with the education they received at their alma mater. In the survey, directed last spring to graduates who were four, seven and 10 years out of school, 97.2 percent of the responders indicated they consider their Purdue Calumet education better than or equal to the education received by alumni of other colleges and universities. The survey has been conducted every two years since 1996 in response to a 1993 recommendation by the North Central Association accreditation body that the university establish a formal process for assessing student learning outcomes. Surveys were sent last spring to 2,495 graduates; the response rate was 36.6 percent. Of the more than 900 responders, 88.1 percent also indicated that their Purdue Calumet education has prepared them effectively for their jobs/careers. The indicated percentage responses of education satisfaction and professional preparatory effectiveness are virtually identical with responses to the university's 1998 assessment survey. A 97 percent satisfaction response also was recorded in 1996. "The fact that this year's survey responses so closely parallel the feedback of previous years' surveys continues to validate the quality of education Purdue Calumet students are receiving," Purdue Calumet Chancellor James Yackel said. "These results also validate the level of expertise and commitment demonstrated by our faculty and academic staff in delivering an education that is responsive to our rapidly changing society." Additionally, according to survey feedback . . . – nearly 84 percent of responders indicated that their education has been "effective" or "very effective" preparing them to adapt to workplace change; – nearly 62 percent indicated their job is directly related to the academic field in which they majored at Purdue Calumet. – the indicated median annual salary earned by the responders is $40,000-($33,000 for those four years out of school, $39,000 for those seven years out and $44,000 for those 10 years out).
