Bergstrom Honored With A Named Professorship

West Lafayette, Ind. – Donald E. Bergstrom, professor of medicinal chemistry in Purdue University's School of Pharmacy and Pharmacal Sciences, has been named Walther Professor of Medicinal Chemistry.

His appointment was confirmed Friday (5/4) by Purdue's Board of Trustees.

"Dr. Bergstrom's outstanding achievements in cancer research make him most deserving of this professorship," said Varro E. Tyler, Purdue executive vice president for academic affairs. "Recommendations of his peers, who are some of the best chemists in the country, wholeheartedly endorse his appointment."

The recently established Walther professorship is named after the Walther Cancer Institute in Indianapolis, which is helping support Bergstrom's research. Founded by Dr. Joseph E. Walther, the institute is a non-profit corporation that conducts medical research.

Bergstrom joined Purdue's pharmacy school in 1989 after serving as associate professor and later as professor at the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, for nine years. Before that, he was an assistant professor at the University of California, Davis.

Bergstrom's research focuses on developing synthetic chemistry to modify DNA. The ultimate goal is to "turn off" certain genes that lead to cancer and viral diseases including acquired immune deficiency syndrome, or AIDS. In addition to the Walther Cancer Institute, Bergstrom has received research grants from the National Institutes of Health and the American Cancer Society.

He has a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Washington at Seattle and doctorate in chemistry from the University of California at Berkeley.

Bergstrom is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and American Chemical Society. He is a National Institutes of Health Fellow and received the faculty award for outstanding research from the University of North Dakota chapter of Sigma Xi, scientific research honor society.
