Students read about Muhammad Ali in Black Cultural Center contestWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue University's Black Cultural Center Library will award local elementary and high school students at 2 p.m. on Feb. 3 for winning entries in a book report contest called "Lighting the Way.""This contest is designed to honor the outstanding life of the African-American humanitarian, boxer and global activist Muhammad Ali," said Dorothy Washington, Black Cultural Center librarian. "We hope parents, teachers, mentors and others will encourage students to participate." The objectives of the contest allow students to read pre-selected and grade-appropriate biographies of Muhammad Ali. "Students should read books that match their grade level; many the pre-selected books are available for loan at the BCC library," Washington said. The booklist includes "I Shook Up the World: The Incredible Life of Muhammad Ali,"by Maryum "May May" Ali for students in grades K-2, "Champion: the Story of Muhammad Ali"by Jim Haskins for students in grades 3-5 and "The Greatest: Muhammad Ali"by Walter Dean Myers for grades 6-8. High school students are reading "The Soul of a Butterfly: Reflections on Life's Journey"by Muhammad Ali and Hana Yasmeen Ali and should use three additional readings to develop their essays. Students will be judged on creativity, content, structure, grammar and originality. Students also are encouraged to express their opinion and explain why they liked the book. More detailed information pertaining to the criteria is available on the BCC Library Web site at http://www.purdue.edu/bcc/library/Ali.htm First place winners will receive a subsidized trip for two with the Black Cultural Center on the African American Legacy Tour to Louisville, Ky., with a visit to the Muhammad Ali Center, an educational game and tickets to the Black Voices of Inspiration and Jahari Dance Troupe. Runner-up prizes also consist of tickets to Black Voices of Inspiration, Jahari and educational books. All participants will receive a certificate of excellence.
