Delay of flu vaccine limits availability for Purdue flu clinic

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Due to a three-week delay of flu vaccine shipments for all locations in the United States, only a limited number of vaccines will be available at Purdue University's flu clinic Thursday (Oct. 26).

The clinic will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Stewart Center, Room 214, and benefit-eligible faculty, staff, graduate staff, official Purdue retirees and their spouses or same-sex domestic partners will be eligible for free flu shots. Stewart Center is located off Grant Street next to the Purdue Memorial Union.

WorkLife Programs is adding two dates for flu shot clinics at the West Lafayette campus in November, based on receipt of more vaccine shipments, said Julie Huetteman, a wellness specialist with WorkLife Programs.

The first clinic will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 9 at the Purdue Technology Center. It will be open to official Purdue retirees, their spouses or same-sex partners, and those who are classified as being at high risk for flu complications.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend the following groups receive flu vaccinations every year due to being in the high-risk category:

• Children 6 months to 5 years old.

• Pregnant women.

• People age 50 and older.

• People of any age with certain chronic medical conditions.

• People who live in nursing homes or other long-term care facilities.

• People who live with or care for those at high risk for complications from flu and healthcare workers.

The second date later in November, which has not yet been determined, will be open to all other participants.

High-risk individuals who need to get the flu shot earlier should contact Purdue Student Health Center's Urgent Care Center at (765) 494-1724, their health care provider or attend a local community flu shot clinic.

To check the status of vaccine availability, call (765) 494-5461 or go online.
