Purdue to participate in week to promote financial literacyWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University will participate in the first Indiana Money Smart Week that is set aside to help promote financial literacy for state residents.
Purdue will be among several organizations in the Midwest to participate in the week on Oct. 15-21.
One of the goals of the week is to promote financial literacy information for college youth, an age group that may be likely to overextend their credit, make poor financial choices and become victims of identity theft, said Joyce Hall, executive director of the Purdue University Division of Financial Aid.
The campaign will include Purdue Extension, the Purdue University Collections Office and the Detroit Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, which organized the event and similar ones in surrounding states.
Beginning at noon Sunday (Oct. 15), Boiler TV programming will include "Affluenza", a PBS program regarding money management. This show will run at 7 p.m. Oct. 16, 7 a.m. and noon Oct. 17, 7 p.m. Oct. 18, 7 a.m. and noon Oct. 19 and noon Oct. 21.
Monday (Oct. 16) will commemorate Financial Wellness Day at Purdue and will be marked by an event held at Purdue Memorial Union coordinated by the University Collections Office.
Vendor booths will be on site all day with financial professionals available to answer questions. Vendors will include Sallie Mae, Purdue Employees Federal Credit Union, Edward Jones, First Financial Bank, Raymond James Financial Services and the Purdue Alumni Association. The University Collections Office also will be there to discuss Perkins and Purdue loan programs.
Special sessions in Purdue Memorial Union, Room 118, will include: 10-11 a.m., student loan consolidation tips and reminders, Sallie Mae; 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., financial planning tips, buying your first home, identity theft tips and solutions, Purdue Employees Federal Credit Union; 12:30-1:30 p.m., tips on investments and retirement planning, Edward Jones; and 1:45-3 p.m., discussion on consolidation and tips for successful student loan repayment, Sallie Mae.
Thursday (Oct. 19) will mark Financial Literacy Day at Purdue and is coordinated by the Division of Financial Aid. Vendors will be on site all day and include USA Funds, Sallie Mae, Purdue Employees Federal Credit Union and the Indiana Secretary of State.
Sessions in Purdue Memorial Union, Room 118, will include: 9-10 a.m. and 10:30-11:30 a.m., Money 101, a money-management seminar that provides practical tips for students, Division of Financial Aid; noon to 1 p.m. and 1:30-2:30 p.m., Money 102, information about credit cards, credit scoring and identity theft, Purdue Employees Federal Credit Union; and 3-4 p.m. and 4:30-5:30 p.m., "Living on Your Own: A Crash Course in Cash," including information on budgeting, credit, buying a home, investing and fraud protection, Indiana secretary of state.
