U.S. Ambassador to Angola to talk about oil, foreign policyWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Cynthia G. Efird, U.S. ambassador to the Republic of Angola, will speak Oct. 16 at Purdue University on "Oil, Democracy and Sovereignty U.S. Policy and Angola."The talk, which is free and open to the public, is at 2 p.m. in the Krannert Building Auditorium. Efird is a member of the U.S. Foreign Service and has worked on public diplomacy, trade, conflict resolution and democracy development in Africa and Europe for more than 26 years. The Michigan native also has directed all public affairs activities for the Bureau of African Affairs at the Department of State and has served as special adviser to the associate U.S. trade representative. She also has served with U.S. embassies in Yugoslavia (1978-1982), the German Democratic Republic (1983-1985), Mozambique (1988-1989), Austria (1989-1993) and Moscow (1997-2000). In 2000 she oversaw reconstruction of the media sector in Kosovo under the United Nations mission as part of the Organization for Cooperation and Security. Efird's talk is sponsored by the Department of Political Science, which is housed in the College of Liberal Arts.
