Purdue sails through Homecoming festivities
David Train and Purdue student Brooke Hilsmeyer help Hannah and Harrison Smith, ages 5 and 2, practice their paddling skills Saturday (Sept. 23) at the Main Academy Global canoe exhibit. The exhibit, located on the Purdue mall, was part of the university's Homecoming events. Train is president and CEO of the Main Academy and a former British Olympic canoe racing coach, and Hilsmeyer is a chemistry and mechanical engineering major from Jasper, Ind. Hannah and Harrison are the children of Charles Smith, a Purdue alumnus from Shaker Heights, Ohio, who graduated in 1992 with a degree in electrical engineering. The Main Academy works with schools, churches, public organizations, business and industry to inspire systems thinking in people worldwide so that they are be better prepared to solve common challenges while creating an inclusive and sustainable world community. Train developed the Liberty Bell Boat pictured as a design that can be constructed as part of community or organizational development projects. The construction and use of the boats is to support primary and secondary science, technology, pre-engineering, and math standards. More information about the Main Academy is available online.
