National Disability Employment Awareness Month is in October

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue's Affirmative Action Office is offering several events in October as part of National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

Congress designated October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month by Congress in 1998. The Office of Disability Employment Policy, an agency in the Department of Labor, is in charge of this national awareness month.

Purdue has a number of events that are intended to increase the community's awareness of the contributions and skills of American workers with disabilities. The events are free and open to the public, but participants are encouraged to make reservations. The workshops are as follows:

• Oct. 4. 9:30-11:30 a.m. Americans with Disabilities Act for Supervisors, Stewart Center, Room 318. This workshop, open to all campus supervisors, will examine what constitutes a disability, how to recognize an employee's request for a reasonable accommodation and what to do next.

• Oct. 12. 9:30-11:30 a.m. Americans with Disabilities Act Overview, Stewart Center, Room 318. This workshop focuses on what the law means, its history and what's in store in the future.

• Oct. 17. 2-3:30 p.m. Audio conference, Purdue Memorial Union, Room 136. This workshop is the first session in the 2006-07 Americans with Disabilities Act Audio Conference Series presented by the Great Lakes ADA and Accessible IT Center. The program is designed to offer individuals advanced information on various disability-related issues.

• Oct. 18. 2-3 p.m. Reasonable Accommodation Workshop, Purdue Memorial Union, Room 318. This interactive workshop will examine the reasonable accommodation process through various case studies.

• Oct. 24. 6-7:30 p.m. Transitioning From College to Work, Stewart Center, Room 322. This workshop will provide students with disabilities the knowledge necessary to successfully transition from college to the work environment.
