Forestry student places first in international design competition

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Hongtao Zhou, a Purdue University graduate student in the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, received first place in an international woodworking design competition for his entry, an adjustable rocking chair for plus-sized individuals.

Zhou received first place in the "ready-to-assemble" category, meaning the chair is made from individual parts that are capable of being mass-produced. He designed and built the chair in a class taught by Rado Gazo, Richard Paul and Eva Haviarova, professors within the departments of Forestry and Natural Resources and Visual and Performing Arts. Zhou came to Purdue from Northeast Forestry University in Harbin, China, where he studied forest products and furniture design.

The competition, which took place at the International Woodworking Fair, Aug. 23-26 in Atlanta, Ga., featured furniture pieces from 46 educational institutions, all of them designed and built by students. (MEF)
