President's Leadership Class chosen for 2006-07
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University has chosen the student participants for its 2006-07 President's Leadership Class.The class is made up of 33 first-year Purdue students with outstanding academic and extracurricular achievements. Purdue President Martin C. Jischke brought the idea for the leadership class with him from Iowa State University when he began his tenure as Purdue's 10th president in 2000.
The leadership class has three goals: to provide participants with an opportunity to interact with the president and first lady Patty Jischke; to provide a foundation for the students to become effective and involved student leaders at Purdue; and to provide the students with a unique view of the characteristics and skills of academic, community and national leaders.
Students will meet once a week at the president's home to listen to guest speakers, including Purdue faculty and staff and local, state and national leaders, and to discuss topics related to leadership issues.
Approximately 1,800 students were invited to apply for the leadership class based upon test scores and high school academic rank. A committee reviewed applications for achievements and excellence in high school, including leadership roles and community service.
