Purdue vs. IU Blood Donor Challenge starts Sept. 18

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Students, faculty, staff and community members are invited to participate in the 10th annual Purdue vs. IU Blood Donor Challenge beginning in September.

From Sept. 18 through Nov. 10, the friendly competition encourages Indiana residents to donate blood at any of the five participating blood agencies.

The university with the most donors will be honored at the Old Oaken Bucket football game between Purdue and Indiana University on Nov. 18 at Purdue University.

Purdue leads the overall series 6-3, but Indiana University was victorious last year.

During Homecoming week, there will be a campus blood drive from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 20 in the East and West Faculty lounges of the Purdue Memorial Union. All blood collected during this event will be counted toward Purdue's total.

In addition to this event, there will be 25 donation sites around the state, including the Indiana Blood Center location in Lafayette. For the complete list of donation sites, as well as to find weekly updates on the competition, go to the Purdue Alumni Association Web site.

The honorary chairwomen of the blood donor challenge are Arnette Tiller, wife of Purdue football coach Joe Tiller, and Jane Hoeppner, wife of Indiana University football coach Terry Hoeppner.

The event is made possible with the joint collaboration of the Purdue Alumni Association, Indiana University Alumni Association, American Red Cross, Heartland Blood Centers, Indiana Blood Center, Community Blood Center-Richmond and the South Bend Medical Foundation.
