Purdue/New Albany Professor Chairs International Conference of 20,000 Animators, Researchers, Educators, Filmmakers, and Artists

John C. Finnegan, associate professor of Computer Graphics Technology at Purdue University in New Albany, IN, gathered 20,000 leading industry professionals in Boston last week for SIGGRAPH 2006, July 31-August 3 at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center.

Finnegan, the SIGGRAPH 2006 Conference Chair, has authored two books on Web design and development and is currently co-authoring a third book on Acting for Animators: Storytelling, Imagination and Analysis.

SIGGRAPH is the industry's most respected technical and creative program, and the world’s largest exhibition focusing on research, science, art, animation, gaming, interactivity, education, and the Web. Newsweek decreed SIGGRAPH as the''Woodstock of computer graphics and interactive techniques.''

''Those of us involved in SIGGRAPH are uniquely committed to science, research, art, and filmmaking related to the computer graphics industry and to the common goal of making tremendous leaps that benefit both technology and the public as a whole,'' stated Finnegan. ''Regardless of whether you live in Paris, Tokyo, or Louisville, our communities benefit directly from advancements in digital arts and supporting technologies.''

As a flourishing cultural center, Louisville metro area reaps many potential rewards from the close proximity of Purdue's growing computer graphics program. This includes the Purdue College of Technology at New Albany having been selected to expand to include Bachelor of Science degrees in several College of Technology disciplines, providing more robust academic opportunities to future CG artists in the area.

SIGGRAPH 2006 newsworthy highlights included the conference Keynote presentation given by Joe Rohde, an executive designer and vice president with Disney Imagineering, which was deemed ''spectacular'' by Computerworld.

''Joe Rohde's unique experiences in leading the conceptualization design, development, and production of Disney's Animal Kingdom in Florida since 1990 and his perspective on the importance of research for realism and consistency in narrative when storytelling made him my natural choice for keynote,'' explained Finnegan.

SIGGRAPH 2006, the 33rd International Conference on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques brought an estimated 20,000 participants from 80 countries to Boston, USA for the industry's most respected technical and creative programs focusing on research, entertainment, science, art, animation, gaming, interactivity, education, and the Web from 30 July to 3 August 2006. The conference includes a three-day exhibition of products and services from the computer graphics and interactive marketplace with more than 230 international exhibiting companies.
