Purdue NotebookAugust 11, 2006 Faculty and staff honors George Hollich, assistant professor of psychological sciences, has received the 2006 Boyd McCandless Award from the American Psychological Association. The award is given annually by the association's Division 7 to recognize a young scientist who has made distinguished contributions throughout the early years of his or her career. Hollich, director of Purdue's Infant Language Lab, studies how young children learn, process and remember language. Karen Myers, assistant professor of communication, was awarded the Redding Dissertation Award by the Organizational Communication Division of the International Communication Association. Her dissertation is titled "Organizational Knowledge and Assimilation in High Reliability Organizations." Rakesh Agrawal, the Winthrop E. Stone Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering, received the 2006 Chemical Engineering Practice Award from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. This award recognizes outstanding chemical engineering contributions in the industrial practice of chemical engineering. Agrawal's current research focus is in energy production issues, especially from renewable resources such as solar-based energy technologies, as well as hydrogen technologies. Suresh Garimella and Kumar Muthuraman have been selected to participate in the National Academy of Engineering's Frontiers of Engineering program. The two-day program brings 81 engineers from industry, academia and government together to discuss new topics in engineering. This year's event, to take place Sept. 21-23 at the Ford Research and Innovation Center in Dearborn, Mich., will examine the nanotechnology-biology interface, intelligent software systems and machines, supply- chain management, and personal mobility. Garimella is the R. Eugene and Susie E. Goodson Professor in the School of Mechanical Engineering and director of the Cooling Technologies Research Center, an industry/university cooperative research center of the National Science Foundation. Muthuraman is an assistant professor in the School of Industrial Engineering whose area of interest is mathematical finance. Wanda Fox, associate professor of curriculum and instruction and coordinator of the Consumer and Family Sciences Education Program, was awarded the 2006 Outstanding University Teacher Educator Award from the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, Education and Technology Division. The award, announced at the group's annual meeting June 22 in Charlotte, N.C., honors a teacher educator who has provided outstanding teacher preparation instruction and has made significant contributions to innovative and unique teacher education. Fox received a plaque, a Waterford crystal apple and a $250 monetary award, provided by Goodheart-Wilcox Publisher. Fox has chaired a leadership team to develop national standards for teachers in family and consumer sciences, and has worked with the Indiana Department of Education and teachers in Indiana on curriculum, assessment of student learning and professional development. Mohit Tawarmalani, an associate professor of quantitative methods in the Krannert School of Management, is the co-recipient of the 2006 Beale-Orchard-Hayes Prize. The award was announced July 30 at the opening ceremony of the 19th Mathematical Symposium of the Mathematical Programming Society in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He received the prize along with Nick Sahinidis, professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering from the University of Illinois, with whom he wrote the paper "A Polyhedral, Branch-and-Cut Approach to Global Optimization." They were recognized for their work on the paper and the BARON (Branch and Reduce Optimization Navigator) software. The computational mathematical programming prize is awarded every three years for a paper demonstrating excellence on the subject of optimization. Alumni honors Christopher Bowman, a 1990 doctoral graduate from Purdue's School of Chemical Engineering, was the 2006 recipient of the R. H. Wilhelm Award. This award recognizes contributions in chemical reaction engineering. Bowman is the department chair and the Mel and Virginia Clark Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of Colorado.
