Purdue agriculture center to sponsor annual field dayWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. When the Pinney-Purdue Agricultural Center holds its annual field day Aug. 23, Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman is expected to speak to approximately 350 community farmers.In addition to Skillman's speech, six Purdue experts will address ways farmers can improve their yields. "We would like to highlight the research done here is for the farmers to reap better harvests and yields and ultimately to keep them in business," said Jon Leuck, superintendent of the Pinney-Purdue Agricultural Center located near Valparaiso. The field day will begin at 7:30 a.m. (CST) with registration and also will include a free pork chop lunch at 12:30 p.m. In addition to Skillman, featured speakers include: Bill Johnson, weed scientist, who will speak about weed control issues. Shawn Conley, soybean specialist, who will talk about soybean issues and concerns. Linda Mason, stored grain specialist, who will teach participants about grain storage pest management. Don Carlson, department of forestry and natural resources, who will speak about woodland pest management and gives a management overview. Bob Nielsen, corn specialist, who will talk about corn issues and fertility. Fred Whitford, director of Purdue pesticide programs, who will speak specifically about his program. Those seeking credits for private pesticide applicator licensing will have the opportunity to fulfill one-third of their applicator permit requirements for a fee of $10. In addition, Certified Crop Adviser credits will be available as well as Continuing Credit Hours. The Pinney-Purdue Agriculture Center is located 5.5 miles east of Valparaiso on U.S. Highway 30, then north half a mile on County Line Road.
