Communication scholars meet at Purdue for honors seminar

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — More than 30 communication doctoral students will attend a three-day conference next week at Purdue University to discuss current topics in the field.

The National Communication Association Doctoral Honors Seminar is from July 24-26. Five graduate students from Purdue will participate.

"The purpose of the seminar is to provide an opportunity for doctoral students to receive expert feedback on their own research, and to engage in discussions on developments in theory, method and research across this discipline," says Mohan Dutta, associate professor of communication at Purdue and conference organizer. "Doctoral students representing 19 of the premier doctoral programs in the nation have been selected to attend the seminar."

The three areas of emphasis for the 2006 seminar are communication theory and research, mass communication theory and research and rhetorical studies.

Patrice Buzzanell, professor of communication at Purdue University; Dale Brashers, associate professor of communication at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; and Tim Levine, professor of communication at Michigan State University, will work with students in communication theory and research. Shyam Sundar, associate professor of communication at Pennsylvania State University; Robert Logan, professor emeritus of the University of Missouri-Columbia; and Dhavan Shah, the Maier-Bascom Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will instruct in mass communication theory and research. Dana Cloud, associate professor of communication studies at the University of Texas at Austin; Dilip Gaonkar, associate professor of communication studies at Northwestern University; and Marouf Hasian, professor of communication at the University of Utah, will focus on rhetorical studies.

The 2006 National Doctoral Honors Seminar is co-sponsored by the National Communication Association and Purdue's Department of Communication and the College of Liberal Arts.
