Caregiving in the Heartland workshop moves to different site

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Information on how to tap into help available for family members and others who provide in-home care for the sick and those with disabilities will be covered at the Caregiving in the Heartland workshop.

The workshop will run from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. June 30 at First Baptist Church Family Life Center at 709 S. Memorial Drive in New Castle, Ind. The workshop was previously going to be held in Monon, Ind.

"Participants will take away a better understanding of how to care for others as well as themselves," said Steve Swain, rural rehabilitation specialist for the Breaking New Ground Outreach program at Purdue University. "The workshop's goal is to help participants feel refreshed, feel better about what they are doing and feel good about themselves."

Speakers and topics include:

• Bill Field, professor of agricultural and biological engineering, who will provide an overview of the program, the history of Breaking New Ground, and how they are working with the Indiana Department of Health and the Indiana State Office of Rural Health.

• Paul Jones, manager of the Breaking New Ground Resource Center, who will speak about caregiver resources available and explain the Rural Caregiver Web site at http://www.ruralcare.info.

• Ed Bell, a strawberry farmer and 2006 Indiana Farm Family of the Year recipient, who will share his experiences and needs as a care-receiver.

• Swain, who will teach participants how to assess rural church and home accessibility.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The cost to attend the workshop is $10. The fee covers lunch, breaks and resource materials. Those interested in attending should contact Breaking New Ground by June 28 at (800) 825-4264, (765) 494-5088 or by e-mail at bng@ecn.purdue.edu.
