Wheat field day provides latest information for seed growers

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. —The latest wheat variety information will be provided June 8 at the Purdue Agricultural Center for Research and Education.

The Purdue Ag Alumni Wheat Field Day, beginning at 1:30 p.m., is free and covers the latest information for seed growers on fusarium head blight, stripe rust, stem rust, other wheat diseases and special traits. Participants will visit yield plots and breeding nurseries.

"This field day not only includes looking at field plots but has a good summary of ongoing research," said Herbert Ohm, field day coordinator and Purdue agronomy professor. "It will include a comprehensive discussion of genetics research and plant-breeding progress."

Potential wheat varieties and how they compare to current cultivars will be discussed, as well as the integration of genetics, genomics and DNA markers in an ongoing variety development program.

Field day speakers include Ohm, other faculty and staff from Purdue and the United States Department of Agriculture-Agriculture Research Service and graduate students.

Seed growers planning to attend should call Jane Lewis at (800) 822-7134 prior to June 8. The Purdue Agricultural Research Center is located at 4540 U.S. 52 W., West Lafayette.

The wheat field day is co-sponsored by the Purdue Small Grains Breeding program, Ag Alumni Seed and the USDA-ARS.
