Science Bound parents to get taste of Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Approximately 40 parents of Indianapolis Public Schools students who participate in Purdue's Science Bound program will discover what the university can offer their children during a retreat taking place this weekend on campus.

The Science Bound parents will attend workshops on energy, forensics and biology on Saturday (May 20), and a workshop on veterinary medicine will take place Sunday (May 21). Purdue first lady Patty Jischke will address the parents during a luncheon from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday in the Purdue Memorial Union's Anniversary Drawing Room. Parents also will tour campus and attend a ballet.

Wesley Campbell, Science Bound director, said parents will gain valuable insight on what their children will need to succeed at Purdue.

"The first Science Bound class will arrive on campus in the fall of 2007," Campbell said. "This retreat will familiarize parents with the wide variety of opportunities available to their children and what it will take to thrive in their chosen fields."

George Okantey, Science Bound parent program director, said parents also appreciate the opportunity to interact with other parents who are committed to advancing their children's education.

"Science Bound parents have worked very hard to support their children's education and prepare them for Purdue," Okantey said. "Throughout the year, they have attended workshops, after-school programs and field trips. This retreat will be a productive and fun way to wrap up the school year."

Science Bound, a program initiated by Purdue President Martin C. Jischke in 2002, mentors eighth-grade to 12th-grade Indianapolis Public Schools students and encourages them to take classes in preparation for future careers in science, engineering, technology, agriculture and math-science education. Upon acceptance, Science Bound students receive an opportunity to earn a full-tuition scholarship to Purdue to study in an approved technical field.
