Workshop for caregivers and receivers in rural communitiesWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. An upcoming workshop will provide information on how to tap into help available for family members and others who provide in-home care for the sick and those with disabilities.The Caregiving in the Heartland workshop will take place from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. May 13 at the Monon United Methodist Church, 501 N. Market St., in Monon, Ind. "Participants will take away a better understanding of how to care for others as well as themselves," said Steve Swain, rural rehabilitation specialist for the Breaking New Ground Outreach program at Purdue University. "The workshop's goal is to help participants feel refreshed, feel better about what they are doing and feel good about themselves." Speakers and topics include: Bill Field, a Purdue professor of agricultural and biological engineering, will provide an overview of Breaking New Ground, the program's history and how it is working with the Indiana Department of Health and the Indiana State Office of Rural Health. Paul Jones, manager of the Breaking New Ground Resource Center, will speak about caregiver resources available and the program Web site. Ed Bell, a strawberry farmer and 2006 Indiana Farm Family of the Year recipient, will share his experiences and needs as a care receiver. Swain will teach how to assess rural church and home accessibility. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The cost to attend the workshop is $10, due at the door.
