Folk singer presents musical video of Middle East

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University's Committee on Peace Studies will present a performance by folk singer Dave Lippman at 8 p.m. Saturday (April 29).

Lippman will perform his new song-slide-sound program, "Star of Goliath," based on a recent visit to Israel and Palestine. The event, in Beering Hall of Liberal Arts and Education, Room 2280, is free and open to the public.

Lippman, who also plays George Shrub, "the singing CIA agent," has appeared many times in the Greater Lafayette area, says Harry Targ, professor of political science and coordinator of the peace studies program.

"On a trip to Palestine in 2004, Lippman made his way through towns, refugee camps and cities of the West Bank and Gaza," Targ says. "He interviewed Israelis and Palestinians on the occupation of the two areas and pieced together newly written songs with slides and sounds from the region creating the musical and video montage.

"We wanted to end this difficult year with a mix of serious and humorous materials. Lippman's talents particularly fit this goal."

In addition to Lippman's impressions of Palestine, he will present music and images from recent visits of hurricane-devastated New Orleans and Venezuela. The program will open with his George Shrub CIA (Committee to Intervene Anywhere) character.

The Committee on Peace Studies, which is housed in the Department of Political Science, is an interdisciplinary committee of faculty from English, history, philosophy, women's studies, and child development and family studies. Purdue undergraduate students can earn a 15-hour undergraduate minor on subjects covering issues of war and peace. The committee also brings speakers to campus and organizes presentations on issues related to peace and justice.
