Campus activities

— The Women's Studies Program is sponsoring a reception and book signing for professor Mangala Subramaniam's new book, "The Power of Women's Organizing: Gender, Caste and Class in India," from 5-6:30 p.m. on April 25. The event is in Beering Hall of Liberal Arts and Education, Room 7150. The book, published by Lexington Books, was released in March. Subramaniam is an assistant professor of sociology and women's studies in the College of Liberal Arts.

— Richard Swinburne, emeritus Nolloth Professor of Philosophy of the Christian Religion at University of Oxford, will present "God and Mortality" at 4:30 p.m. on April 25 in Wetherill Laboratory of Chemistry, Room 172. The talk is part of the Department of Philosophy's Colloquium Spring 2006 series. The series is supported by the College of Liberal Arts' Dean's Department Enhancement Funds.

Faculty and staff honors

— Janice Sojka, associate professor in the Large Animal Hospital at Purdue's School of Veterinary Medicine, was awarded the George Award for her contributions to her community. Sojka is the founder of PetSafe, a program that takes care of pets whose owners are in an emergency situation. The award was announced in a ceremony in Lafayette on April 11. PetSafe, in conjunction with the YWCA's women's shelter, often takes in pets of domestic violence victims. PetSafe volunteers, including Purdue veterinary students and staff, also take care of pets for families involved in disaster situations, such as fires. Pets also may receive veterinary care while in PetSafe's possession.

Alumni honors

— Tom Cox of Terrace Park, Ohio, has been hired as a client director at Cincinnati-based dunnhumbyUSA, a marketing company for many leading consumer packaged goods and retail companies. Previously, Cox worked in brand management for Proctor & Gamble and as a marketing director for Reliant Energy. He received a bachelor's degree in agricultural economics from Purdue and an MBA from the University of Notre Dame.
