Purdue ag economist in D.C. to discuss livestock production

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A Purdue University animal agriculture expert will be in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday (April 18) to help present findings on the future of livestock production in North America.

The Farm Foundation will release its report, "The Future of Animal Agriculture in North America," from noon to 2 p.m. during a press conference at the National Press Club. Michael Boehlje, a professor of agricultural economics, headed the working group that studied the economics of animal production.

The report proposes key policy alternatives and business strategies for change and analyzes the potential impact on stakeholders. Among concerns the report addresses are environmental and regulatory pressures, consumer demands, and labor and community issues. The report's stated objectives are to provide an understanding of the current state of the industry; a glimpse into the future; ideas for change and potential consequences; and an inventory of issues that need further research, industry actions or government policy.

This report results from a partnership among the Farm Foundation, government agencies, industry groups, other nonprofit organizations and foundations, and the academic community.
