Portion of AIDS Quilt to be on display during awareness weekWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. An upcoming AIDS awareness program at Purdue University will include the display of a group of panels from the AIDS Quilt.The weeklong AIDS awareness program, from April 16-22, will include a variety of activities, speakers and events. "It's important that everyone learn about the AIDS crisis and what steps they can take to help protect themselves," said Anurag Garg, director of the Purdue Student Union Board's ideas and issues committee. "With all the recent talk of SARS, the bird flu, tsunamis and hurricanes, the problem of AIDS has fallen to the back burner. Our aim is to bring AIDS to the forefront and make people realize that this crisis is not over yet it is still real." The group of AIDS Quilt panels will be on display from 6-8 p.m. Sunday (April 16), from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. April 17-21 and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 22 in Purdue Memorial Union, Room 118. The awareness program also will include: Monday, April 17 Various times. AIDS educator Eric Garrison will be addressing some classes; 7 p.m. WBAA town forum, Purdue Memorial Union's Great Hall. Tuesday, April 18 8 p.m. "Rent" will be showing on BTV. Students are invited to watch the movie on the big screen in the Purdue Memorial Union student lounges. Free popcorn will be provided. Wednesday, April 19 8 p.m. Open Mic Night in the Bean Cellar. A candlelight vigil will follow. Thursday, April 20 All day, people across campus are encouraged to wear red to show their support; 7:30 p.m. Cleve Jones, AIDS activist and founder of the AIDS Quilt, will speak in Purdue Memorial Union's South Ballroom. A question-and-answer session will follow, and the AIDS Quilt viewing will be extended until around 10 p.m. The sponsors include the Purdue Student Union Board, Women's Resource Office, Diversity Resource Office, Student Wellness Office, WBAA Radio, Alpha Phi Omega, Ally, Queer Student Union, Delta Lambda Phi, Earhart Residence Hall's Itasca Club, Harrison Residence Hall's Cavalier Club, Cinergy Foundation, Harrison High Key Club, Office of Engagement, Office of the Vice President of Human Relations, Wal-Mart and the Windsor Residence Hall Club.
