Purdue to offer courses on lumber production

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University will offer three courses on wood and lumber production April 12-13 at the Jasper Inn in Jasper, Ind.

The hardwood lumber grading and manufacturing workshop is from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. April 12. Instructors will provide an understanding of grading concepts and terminology. Participants will get hands-on experience and practice grading lumber. Registration cost is $75 and includes materials, breaks and lunch.

The mass customization luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. and will conclude at 1:15 p.m. on April 13. Discussion will include the benefits of customization to individual operations while still producing at a competitive rate. The registration fee is $20 and includes a buffet lunch.

The wood manufacturing seminar is 1-5 p.m. April 13. The meeting will cover topics including solving wood moisture problems, along with joint construction and fasteners. The cost of registration is $50 and includes the costs of materials and an afternoon break.

"The lumber grading and wood manufacturing programs provide basic training to participants," said Daniel Cassens, professor of forestry and natural resources. "The mass customization program is intended to help managers become more competitive. These seminars offer an opportunity for people in the southern Indiana region to gain experience."

Speakers for the events include Rado Gazo, professor of forestry and natural resources; Carl Eckelman, professor of wood science; Daniel Cassens, professor of forestry and natural resources; and Emmanuel Kodzi Jr., a graduate student in forestry and natural resources.
