Purdue opens new theater with 'A Story About a Girl'WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue University will open the new Carole and Gordon Mallett Theatre with a workshop production of "A Story About a Girl" from March 31 to April 9.
The play tells the story of Jessica, a girl who can barely speak, from her birth to adulthood. She lives in a world where she cannot fully be heard, yet her longings are as big and loud as anyone's. Through this play in a play, Jessica tells the story of how she finds her voice through the joy and pain of love, and through the art of theater. Rand said Reingold's new work is cartoonish, dream-like, devastating and hopeful. "'A Story About a Girl' is Jessica's search to make sense of her life and find her voice as she shares her story," he said. Reingold writes for theater, television and film. Her play "String Fever," starring Cynthia Nixon had a sold-out run off-Broadway in 2003. Other plays have been produced in New York, at theaters across the country, and have been published in "Women Playwrights: Best Plays" and "Best American Short Plays." She has also won the Kennedy Center's Fund for New American Plays' Roger Stevens Award. This month, Reingold is working with the Purdue cast and director of "A Story About a Girl" as a playwright-in-residence. Rand has worked on more than 50 productions at Purdue and is head of the undergraduate theater program. Most recently, Rand directed Purdue Theatre's Black Box production of "Road" by Jim Cartwright. The new state-of-the-art Carole and Gordon Mallett Theatre is a small, flexible space that can accommodate many different design configurations. The intimate venue seats 100 to 150 people and will be used for both main stage and studio productions. Admission is $7.50 for the general public and $6 for students. Tickets are available at the Loeb, Elliott and Yue-Kong Pao box offices or by calling (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW.
