Students from veterinary school win award at national meetingWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Angie Delks of Fowler, Ind., and Kim Dimmich of Boswell, Ind., third-year students in Purdue's School of Veterinary Medicine, were recognized for their research at the 2006 American Association of Swine Veterinarians annual meeting.Their abstract, titled "Duration of viability of dessicated porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus in a PRRS MLV vaccine," was selected as one of the 15 student abstracts chosen to be presented at the annual meeting on March 4-7 in Kansas City, Mo. The students investigated a biosecurity concern from Canadian swine veterinarian Michael Sheridan regarding the shipment of broken vials of a vaccine. They found the virus wouldn't leave the immediate area if left undisturbed. Delks presented the research and received a $5,000 scholarship for best student presentation. Sandra Amass, associate professor in veterinary clinical sciences, supervised the students. "The competition was tough," Amass said. "We are all so proud of Angie and Kim." Thirty-five students representing 14 universities submitted abstracts for consideration. From those submissions, 15 students were selected to present during the annual meeting. Alpharma Animal Health, sponsor of the student seminar, provided a $500 travel stipend to each student selected to participate. Judges representing private practice, academia and industry selected the recipients on the basis of communications skills in the writing of the abstract and the presentation of the case report, and on applicability of the research to swine medicine.
