Training set for Junior Master Gardener leadersWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. A workshop for instructors for the Indiana Junior Master Gardner program will take place Monday (Feb. 13) at the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service office in Tippecanoe County.The Indiana Junior Master Gardener training is a hands-on workshop designed to introduce the curriculum. The session is open to adults interested in working with youth and gardening in small groups. "The Junior Master Gardener program is a hands-on approach to teaching youth about horticulture, the environment and leadership," said Kathryn Orvis, Purdue Extension specialist and workshop instructor. "JMG groups can be organized through public or private schools, as part of home schooling or after-school programs, or through existing youth organizations such as Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, 4-H or the YMCA." Junior Master Gardener programs currently operate in 36 Indiana counties. The program helps youth learn about gardening and how to contribute to the community through local service projects. The training runs from 6-9 p.m. The registration fee of $25 includes workshop materials and refreshments. A limited quantity of student handbooks and leader manuals for the program also will be available and must be purchased separately.
