Civil engineering offers industry research opportunities, interns
The new project is called Industrial Relations for Civil Engineering and Construction Engineering and Management and is led by Bryan Hubbard. As part of the program, Hubbard will help promote research initiatives to companies, foster potential partnering opportunities between faculty members in civil engineering and industry, and expand the school's co-operative education opportunities for students. Co-operative educational opportunities allow students to work with companies as part of their educational experiences. "Our co-operative educational enables students to get actively involved with companies," said Hubbard. "And we're looking for companies to get even more involved with our students in many different ways whether it be cooperative education and internships for undergrads or working with our graduate students." Companies Purdue's Construction Engineering and Management division has partnered with include HNTP Corp. in Indianapolis; Bowen Engineering Corp. in Indianapolis; American Consulting Inc. in Indianapolis, South Bend, Ind. and Columbus, Ohio; and Trayler Brothers Inc. in Evansville, Ind. Hubbard, who came to Purdue in 2002, currently serves as the director of internships for Purdue's Division of Construction Engineering and Management. As the director of internships, he places and supervises more than 140 students per year, working in the construction industry fulfilling the experiential learning component required for completion of their construction engineering degree. "Bryan will continue to lead the internship program for construction engineering and management and also will develop new co-op and internship initiatives for civil engineering," said Katherine Banks, interim head and professor of civil engineering. "Bryan's role in both programs presents an excellent opportunity to coordinate professional practice opportunities for the students in all areas of civil and construction engineering." Companies interested in finding out more information can contact Hubbard at (765) 494-2241 or bhubbard@purdue.edu. Prior to coming to Purdue, Hubbard worked in industry as a senior design engineer for Marley Cooling Tower, an international designer and manufacturer of cooling towers and cooling tower components for the refrigeration, industrial and power generation, and heating, ventilation and air-conditioning markets. He was also the lead inventor on a process for water purification and desalination in industrial cooling systems and holds two patents. Hubbard received his doctorate in civil engineering from Texas A&M University and his bachelor's and master's degrees from Purdue. He is licensed as a professional engineer in the state of Indiana. He is currently serving on the board of directors for the ACE Mentoring Program of Indiana, an after-school program that promotes architecture, construction and civil engineering to high school students.
