Nominations sought for Purdue's Violet Haas Award

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Council on the Status of Women at Purdue University is currently seeking nominees for the 2006 Violet Haas Award.

Established in 1990, the award recognizes individuals, programs or departments currently at Purdue that have effectively facilitated the advancement of women in hiring, promotion, education and salary, or have generally enhanced a positive professional climate for women at the university.

The awards are named for Haas, an electrical engineering professor from 1962 to 1986, who was instrumental in the early development of the Purdue chapter of the Society of Women Engineers.

Criteria for the award include a demonstration of the breadth and impact of the nominee's accomplishments within and beyond the responsibilities of his/her position; a demonstration of the nominee's noteworthy efforts on behalf of women faculty, staff and/or students at Purdue; and examples of the nominee's efforts on behalf of women outside of Purdue (if applicable). The nominee's length of service at Purdue and time period of accomplishments will also be considered.

To nominate someone for the award, a nomination letter up to three pages in length, a maximum of four letters of support and the nominee's resume, up to four pages in length, should be submitted. Nominations can be considered for three consecutive years. Nominators will be contacted each year to update documentation for the award.

Nominations are due Feb. 22 and should be sent to Judy Ware, Violet Haas Award Selection Committee, English Department, Heavilon Hall 314B, 500 Oval Drive, West Lafayette, IN 47907-2038.

The award winner will receive a plaque at a spring reception and will have their name added to the Violet Haas Legacy Plaque, outside Purdue Memorial Union, Room 108.

The Council on the Status of Women was formed in 1988-89 to create a voice for women at Purdue by studying existing university practices and procedures, and women's professional concerns. The group then makes proposals for adjustments and changes to the director of the Women's Resource Office and other university officials.
