Purdue NotebookJanuary 20, 2006 Appointments and promotions Mark J. Smith, head of electrical and computer engineering, was awarded the Dreamer Award, sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Human Relations. Smith is the Michael J. and Katherine R. Birck Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The award recognizes members of the university community for service that brings the university closer to fulfilling the dream of Martin Luther King Jr. He was recognized Jan. 16 during the university's program to honor King. Shelley MacDermid, professor of child development and family studies, was named a National Council on Family Relations Fellow for 2005 at the November annual conference in Phoenix. She was chosen for the award because of her contributions in family theory, research and practice. MacDermid has 36 refereed journal articles and 19 book chapters published that focus on the relationship between work conditions and family life. She is the co-director of Purdue's Military Family Research Institute and the director of the Center for Families in the College of Consumer and Family Sciences.
Faculty and staff honors Kenneth Ferraro, professor of sociology and director of the Center on Aging and the Life Course, has been named the editor of the Journal of Gerontology: Social Sciences. His four-year term starts this month. The journal publishes articles from the fields of anthropology, demography, economics, epidemiology, geography, political science, public health, social history, social work and sociology.
